In the Spotlight: Yasmin Carter, Ph.D.

Yasmin Carter, Ph.D. is bringing a pop of color to the Department! Starting with us this past month, Dr. Carter is our newest Assistant Professor of Translational Anatomy, teaching 1st year medical students in the Development, Structure and Function course. Originally from New Zealand, Dr. Carter traveled to England to earn her Bachelor Degree and then Canada for her Masters, PhD and her Postdoctoral Fellowship, but coming to the United States was always her dream. It was the beautiful landscape that helped her decide on New England, and the equally “beautiful” teaching and laboratory facilities that brought her to the UMass System. Her passion for her career becomes extremely evident when she speaks of her excitement for all of the research possibilities that await her here. Dr. Carter’s research background is in cellular-level bone imaging utilizing a synchrotron, a type of particle accelerator. Dr. Carter is interested in simulation and modeling and is currently working to build a lab for experimental 3D printing and is looking forward to working with iCELS, both of which she says are the future of medical education. Dr. Carter has an “open door policy” and would like anyone with interests in collaborating on high-resolution bone imaging projects or 3D printing to feel more than welcome to reach out to her. In the little spare time that she does have, Dr. Carter enjoys spending time with her giant Alaskan Malamute sled dog and Do It Yourself (DIY) projects.
