Education

We are part of the Massachusetts Medical School Collaborative. As a result, the Collaborative’s educational competencies, curriculum mapping, and student focus group data are guiding new curriculum and faculty development in Vista, the medical school’s redesigned four-year curriculum.”

Medical Students: Palliative medicine is a popular elective rotation for fourth-year UMass Chan students. Through didactic and bedside teaching, these students learn basic symptom management and serious illness communication skills from the different members of our interdisciplinary team.

Residents and Fellows: A rotation in Palliative medicine is required for all Internal Medicine residents and Hematology-Oncology and Critical Care fellows. These learners work on more advanced pain and symptom management strategies and lead conversations with patients about their goals and wishes. In addition, we have our own Palliative Care fellowship which started in 2021. We train one fellow each year.

Geriatric fellows are also required to do a palliative care rotation.
