External Faculty Development Programs

External organizations provide a wealth of courses and programs for the professional development of faculty in academic medicine. In addition to those listed below, many professional societies offer courses and programs for faculty development, typically at their annual meeting. The resources below are provided as information only and do not imply any endorsement by the Office of Faculty Affairs.


American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Leadership Courses

The AAMC offers a variety of leadership courses directed at different audiences (see here for a full list). Courses for faculty are offered annually and include the following (see here for a list of UMass Chan faculty who have participated in AAMC Seminars):

Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar  For women physicians and scientists at the assistant professor or instructor level: designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to navigate the academic medicine enterprise as well as continue on the path to leadership.

Mid-Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar For women physicians and scientists at the associate professor level who hold leadership positions within their discipline, department or institution: designed to provide the knowledge and skills required to continue advancing to leadership roles in academic medicine.

Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar  For junior faculty who are members of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups aspiring to leadership positions: designed to provide participants with real-world guidance and tools for pursuing career advancement in academic medicine, developing key professional competencies, building skills in grant writing and communications, and expanding their network of colleagues and role models. 

Mid-Career Minority Faculty Leadership Seminar  For faculty at the associate professor level aspiring to leadership positions in academic medicine: designed to provide networking opportunities, small group executive coaching sessions, career development planning, as well as observational learning with a senior faculty member outside their institution.

Leadership and Management Foundations for Academic Medicine and Science For new and emerging leaders (including, but not limited to, assistant and associate professors, program directors, assistant deans): designed to provide critical knowledge and skill-building experiences in core areas vital to leadership and management.

Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Certificate Program For early to mid-career professionals who are aspiring to or are already in leadership roles in health professions education: designed to develop educational leaders in health professions education through evidence-based, collaborative learning, and reflective practice. Delivered as a one-year, cohort-based program.        


Other External Programs

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine
The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM®) program is a year-long part-time fellowship for women faculty in schools of medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy. The program is dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today's complex health care environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. A number of women faculty leaders at UMass Chan have participated in this prestigious program (see here for a list).

Harvard Macy Institute
The Harvard Macy Institute offers professional development courses in health professions education each year in Boston, MA. Courses for faculty include:

  • Program for Educators in Health Professions Designed to provide participants with the knowledge base and skills to enhance their expertise in conducting an educational project of their own design and take a leadership role in the educational activities at their institutions.
  • A Systems Approach to Assessment in Health Professions Education Designed to encourage participants to apply systems thinking in designing assessment programs to support the continuous quality improvement of students, trainees, faculty, and curricula.
  • Leading Innovations in Health Care & Education Designed to provide participants with the tools and knowledge to lead and manage change in their health care delivery system and educational environment.
  • Health Care Education 2.0 Designed to provide participants with the ability to use technology to create innovative learning environments and materials.

Harvard School of Public Health
The Harvard School of Public Health offers a variety of courses and programs on leadership and challenges in health care.

Center for Creative Leadership
The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) offers courses and programs on leadership, as well as ones targeted to specific audiences and skills.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) offers programs on leadership, particularly for faculty from disadvantaged and/or underrepresented backgrounds and in the areas of health disparities and community health.

Raising a Resilient Scientist Series is for faculty, staff scientists, and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills.
