OUTREACH

GLOBAL OUTREACH

Several members of the faculty and staff from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology have been on a number of global outreach and missionary excursions over the years.  These trips were undertaken to bring care and assistance to many underserved or disaster-stricken areas of the world.  Teaching healthcare providers in these regions has also been the goal of many trips.  Since the early 1990s, faculty and staff have travelled to Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Rwanda, Ghana, China, India, and many other areas.

For over 20 years, Urogynecology faculty member Dr. Cynthia Hall has traveled to Africa to provide urogynecologic surgical care to patients in need through the International Organization for Women and Development. The program provides much needed surgical care for patients with fistulas as well as other urogynecologic concerns. Medical education is also a focus of the organization and thus fellows, residents and medical students are invited to join her team every year.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Many faculty and staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology participate in community outreach activities.  Resident physicians have joined Career Day at Girls Inc and contributed to Worcester Healthy Baby Collaborative activities. Diaper Drives, team walk activities and lunch time walks are sponsored by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Each year, the department collects donated mittens, hats, scarfs and sponsors the Belmont St School Children's Mitten Party.

UMass Memorial's Maternal Fetal Medicine division is piloting a community health worker role to enhance the care given to the Latina women attending prenatal clinic.
