The announcement this week of a new, community-based outpatient clinic for veterans to be built on the campus of UMass Medical School described how the clinic will mean improved access to health care and has been several years in the making, an important goal and a personal one for Chancellor Michael Collins, according to coverage in the Worcester Business Journal. Thanks to the partnership between VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare system and UMass Medical School and with the support of U.S. Rep. James McGovern, the new clinic will occupy 53,000 square feet on the first two levels of a new, four-story clinical building on the site of the current MassDOT Highway headquarters.

"We were told ‘no’ many times," Chancellor Collins told the Worcester Business Journal, after a press conference on Monday, Sept. 30, announcing the clinic. Collins thanked everyone who came together to make the clinic a reality, including McGovern.

UMass President Mary Meehan said Collins was steadfast in getting the clinic approved.

“Over the last 13 years of working together, I haven’t seen him more enthusiastic than he’s been about this project," UMass President Marty Meehan said of Collins, in the WBJ.

The clinic, which will include 65 exam, consultation and procedure rooms designed for patient-aligned care teams, will open in 2021. The announcement was covered in more than a dozen media outlets, including those listed below.
