Among the opportunities available during “Wellness Week” was the chance to visit with Finn, the therapy dog, pictured here with students in the Lamar Soutter Library.

Students at UMass Medical School are attending events geared toward burnout prevention, mindfulness and healthy eating during “Wellness Week,” sponsored by the Office of Student Life and featured in a Worcester News Tonight newscast on Charter TV3 on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

“You’ve got to be able to find that balance between what works for you as an individual and what works as a professional,” said Mark Miceli, EdD, assistant vice provost for student life and director of student affairs for the School of Medicine, in an interview.

Michael Hirsh, MD, professor of surgery, assistant vice provost for wellness and health promotion, chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and surgeon-in-chief for the UMass Memorial Children’s Center, and Terence Lee, a second-year School of Medicine student who helped plan the wellness activities, were also interviewed on camera about the importance of students taking care of themselves. Geared toward students in the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Nursing and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, events included a session on how to recognize signs of distress, career advice, a self defense class and visits with Finn the therapy dog in the campus library.
