Helen Tian, a member of the School of Medicine Class of 2021, has been selected by the American Society of Hematology to receive one of five 2019-2020 Physician-Scientist Career Development Awards. This award program allows students to gain valuable research experience in hematology under the mentorship of a revered American Society of Hematology member.
Over the course of a year, Tian and her fellow award recipients are immersing themselves in hematology, spending more than 80 percent of their time conducting laboratory, translational or clinical research. They will each receive a total award amount of $42,000, which will help cover supplies, insurance, educational expenses, salary and meeting attendance.
Tian’s area of interest includes acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common acute leukemia in adults and an aggressive disease in children. She is working with Ross L. Levine, MD, a physician-scientist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, whose lab investigates the genetic basis of hematopoietic malignancies.
“My project focuses on how the cell of origin from which AML arises affects ultimate clinical outcome of disease and responsiveness to chemotherapy,” said Tian. “The American Society of Hematology Physician-Scientist Training Award will be pivotal in providing me with a strong foundation in attaining my long-term goal as a physician-scientist in the field of pediatric hematology and oncology.”

The American Society of Hematology is the world’s largest professional society of hematologists dedicated to furthering the understanding, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders affecting the blood. For 60 years, the society has led the development of hematology as a discipline. It publishes Blood, the most cited peer-reviewed publication in the field, as well as the newly launched, online, peer-reviewed open-access journal, Blood Advances.
