Brian Lewis, PhD, associate professor of molecular, cell & cancer biology, has been appointed to a newly created role of assistant vice provost for outreach and recruitment, according to an announcement by Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine, and Sonia Chimienti, MD, associate professor of medicine and vice provost of student life and enrollment management.
Dr. Lewis will strategically coordinate recruitment efforts on behalf of the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Nursing and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, under the direction of the provost and in close collaboration with the deans and the offices of admissions.
“Placing an additional focus on our student recruitment efforts is very much in line with the institutional goals that have been identified and prioritized through UMass Medical School’s ongoing Diversity Summits,” Dean Flotte said. “Specifically, Dr. Lewis will lead efforts to recruit a diverse population of students to the School of Medicine, Graduate School of Nursing and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; increase opportunities for collaboration with the four UMass undergraduate campuses; and build on the success of numerous UMMS pipeline programs, including the Pathway to Graduate Study Program, Baccalaureate MD and the Health Sciences Preparatory Program.”
Lewis has extensive and relevant experience. He will continue to serve as associate dean for diversity and pre-matriculation programs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, in which he oversees efforts to recruit and retain students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. He also directs NIH-funded training programs for PhD students, postbaccalaureate trainees and undergraduates pursuing research careers and, through his leadership of the Office of Outreach Programs, oversees programs that engage undergraduate and K-12 students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in health-related fields. This includes the acclaimed Worcester Pipeline Collaborative, which was established 23 years ago. Lewis has completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Management Development Program.
