The Seven Hills Symphony Orchestra will hold its fall concert at UMass Medical School on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Blais Pavilion of the Lazare Research Building. Musical selections include Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture; GeorgeBizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2; JohnWilliams’ Star Wars Epic Suite (arr. Smith);and Mason Bates’ Mothership.
Joanna Chaurette, MD, PhD, founded Seven Hills in 2005 when, as a student at UMMS, she expressed an interest in starting a chamber group. Chaurette reached out to musicians in the UMass Medical School community, and due to an overwhelming response, the proposed chamber group quickly became an orchestra.
Ten years later, the group remains dedicated to providing performance opportunities to amateur, student and professional musicians throughout Central Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut as well access to high quality, low cost symphonic music for members of those same communities. It also promotes music appreciation through outreach programs, including an annual concerto competition for area student musicians.
The orchestra performs a varied repertoire under the leadership of music director Scott Chaurette, an accomplished double bassist, he holds a bachelor of music from the Boston Conservatory and a master’s of music from the University of Illinois. He is the chairman of the Fine Arts Department and director of orchestral activities at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, Conn.
