“My art is inspired by the exciting visual images of the landscape that I have encountered in traveling in this country, in Europe, and in Japan,” said Dr. Hanshaw, professor of pediatrics and School of Medicine dean emeritus.

Long an accomplished pastel artist, in recent years Hanshaw has focused on oil painting. He cites French Impressionist Claude Monet and American landscape painter Winslow Homer as his artistic idols.

In addition to numerous institutional collections, approximately 275 of Hanshaw’s paintings currently reside in private collections. A coffee table book of his paintings, “The Art of J. Barry Hanshaw”, was published in 2010.

The exhibit will open with an artist’s reception on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. in the library. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.
