MLK Semester of Service Student Award call for proposals

Program supports student-driven local service projects

diciembre 07, 2011

Building on the Promise: Learn and Serve UMass will for the second year sponsor the MLK Semester of Service Student Awards, a community service initiative designed to support student-driven service projects in the communities that surround the UMass Medical School campus. Students from all three schools are invited to submit proposals outlining community service projects they hope to undertake in the spring 2012 semester. The top three ideas will receive funding awards of $500 with which to carry out these projects. Brief proposals are due to UMass Learn and Serve by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23.

Up to three winners will be announced on Martin Luther King J. Day, Monday, Jan. 16, and recognized by School of Medicine Dean Terence Flotte at UMMS MLK Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 23. The judging panel comprises community and institutional leaders and will be coordinated through the UMass Worcester Community Engagement Committee.

Priority will be given to projects that:

  • Enhance or strengthen existing relationships with the community
  • Address both community needs and student learning objectives
  • Provide opportunities for a diverse range of UMass community members to work together
  • Increase the number of students, staff and faculty engaged in the community
  • Include opportunities for learners to reflect on their experience
