Raphael Carandang, MD

Dr CarandangDr. Carandang is an Associate Professor of Neurology, Anesthesiology and Surgery, Director of the Neurology Residency program, and Co-Director of the Combined Neuro-Psychiatry Residency Program and the Neurocritical Care Fellowship programs at the UMass Chan Medical School. He practices as an attending in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit and Vascular Neurology/Stroke Neurology inpatient services as well as in the Electronic-ICU (EICU) and as a Telestroke Physician. He provides acute emergent and critical care for patients with ischemic stroke and other devastating neurological diseases like traumatic brain injury, cerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Dr. Carandang’s research interest include cerebral edema, subarachnoid hemorrhages, vasculitis of the nervous system, stroke epidemiology, and traumatic brain injuries. He is the Site-PI for Stroke NET through the New England Regional Coordinating Center (NERCC) that facilitates and expedites clinical trials in stroke. He is currently investigating the Safety and Efficacy of Dexamethasone in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (DASH) and studying the post-traumatic cerebral edema and its possible genetic determinants. He is also the Site PI for the Clinical trial for IV Glibenclamide for Malignant Ischemic Stroke with Edema (CHARM) and co-investigator of the Outcome Prognostication in Traumatic Brain Injury (OPTIMISM) with Dr. Susanne Muehlschlegel as well as other stroke clinical trials. Other past research studies include investigating the effects of Nicotine on Cerebral Vasospasm after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage as well as Site Investigator for GAMES-RP and MR WITNESS and Co-Investigator for HI-DEF, IDEF, POINT, and an Investigator Initiated randomized clinical pilot trial studying Dantrolene for cerebral vasospasm in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage among others.

  • Sang in a choir and was part of a rock band that both won first place in competitions in medical school.
