Sample schedule

Schedule: The academic year is divided into thirteen 4-week blocks, divided between Medicine and Pediatrics. The PGY-1 schedule is pre-set to provide alternating Medicine and Pediatrics rotations (switching every 3 months) over the course of the year. In subsequent years, residents have the flexibility to design their own schedules so long as they adhere to ACGME requirements. A general curricular overview is above in addition to sample resident schedules.

Med/Peds Primary Care (MPPC): The seven MPPC blocks are dedicated 4-week blocks in our Med/Peds Primary Care Office, located in Westborough. Residents see patients under the mentorship of Med/Peds trained faculty. Each MPPC block has a particular theme (Transitions of Care, Gender, etc.) to supplement and enhance the resident’s primary care education.

Electives: Residents at UMass Med/Peds have a total of 15 blocks of elective time. 8 of these blocks must be an ACGME-approved Medicine or Pediatrics (4 each) elective, and the other 7 can be of the resident’s choosing. It is possible to design an elective that suits a resident’s academic interests and goals should one not be available. Past electives have included Global Health, Research (basic, translational, and clinical), or custom clinical electives.

Vacation: Residents have a total of 20 vacation days and 4 days at the end of December (aka Christmas and New Years) for a total of 24 days. Vacations are not pre-assigned; residents have the flexibility to take vacation during non-service blocks (Elective, MPPC, etc.).
