Capacity Building to Address Perinatal Mental Health

Most perinatal mental health and substance use disorders go untreated. Communities are left to pick up the pieces left as a result of negative family, maternal, neonatal, infant and child outcomes—the effects of which can persist for years, and even generations.

At Lifeline for Moms, we believe that every interaction with an expectant or new parent is an opportunity to recognize, assess, and treat a perinatal mental health or substance use disorder. That’s why we’ve developed and help implement capacity-building perinatal mental health services and interventions. Our free, evidence-based products and resources make it easy for you to integrate perinatal mental health care into everyday practice.

Perinatal Mental Health Capacity-Building Resources

Our capacity-building resources are for perinatal care professionals, policymakers, and advocates. They give practical, evidence-based solutions to address mental health and substance use disorders. We also offer consulting and support around these perinatal mental health resources—no matter your location.

Develop Your Own Perinatal Psychiatry Access Program

In 2014, members of our leadership team developed a population-level, sustainable program to address perinatal mental health care. They named it the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Moms, or MCPAP for Moms. We can help you do the same.

During MCPAP for Moms’ first seven years, it provided over 21,000 clinical encounters and served more than 11,500 perinatal women with mental health and substance use disorders. This Access Program has since become a national model for care, inspiring federal legislation and the creation of more than 20—and growing—programs across the U.S. and the world.

We offer consulting services to support you in the development of a Perinatal Psychiatry Access Program in your own community.
