According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 24.5% of Women 65 years of age and older are dealing with some form of osteoporosis and in a 2017 National Health Statistics Report, research stated that the percentage of a 10-year hip fracture is 2-7% higher in women.

In the second section of our Pharmacology Update in Women's Health Online Course series (see first here), registered nurses and nurse practitioners will learn the required skills needed to provide the best care for women who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Nurses will learn about the etiology and risk factors for osteoporosis in women and the assessment and diagnostic procedures that are associated with the condition. Nurses will also learn how to identify women in need of screening and treatment and what pharmacologic treatments are available for women in need. Lastly, nurses will learn the fundamental skills needed to be able to provide education and decision-making support for women with, or at risk for osteoporosis.
