Join Tess Grynoch and Leah Honor, Research Data & Scholarly Communications Librarians, to learn about the basics of creating an NSF biographical sketch, the use of the NCBI tools, My Bibliography and SciENcv, and how you can use an existing NIH biosketch in SciENcv to create your NSF biographical sketch.

Advanced Statistical Methods/ Sequence Symmetry Analysis | November 8, 2021

There are a host of analytic methods that try to get us closer to quantifying unbiased associations. The development and application these methods are motivated by various perspectives of causal thinking; however, all approaches recognize that the sequence of events is critical. Sequential Symmetry Analysis is an approach that leans heavily on the informativeness of sequence when trying to determine whether an exposure might cause an outcome. This easy to implement method complements and improves upon traditional pre-post analyses by accounting for within-subject attributes and temporal trends. In this presentation, we will introduce the basic concept of sequential symmetry analysis, discuss modifications that help further minimize bias, and present results from an applied example. In the applied example, we conducted an extension of sequence symmetry analysis using the IBM® MarketScan® Research Databases (2013-2018) among patients with type 2 diabetes who had an incident diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and initiation of antidiabetic medications We found that, though NAFLD not being a labeled indication, clinicians’ prescribing practices shift towards antidiabetic medications with evidence of potential benefits and away from other antidiabetic agents following a NAFLD diagnosis
