BBS Student, Melissa Matzelle awarded Abbott Bioresearch Fellowship in Translational Science

Date Posted: septiembre 17, 2010

Melissa Matzelle, a Cell Biology graduate student in the lab of Ellen Gravallese, Professor of Medicine and Cell Biology and Chief of Rheumatology at UMass Memorial, was awarded the Abbott Bioresearch Fellowship in Translational Science. This award will support Melissa's graduate studies for four years.

Research in the Gravallese lab focuses on the effects of inflammation on bone in the setting of rheumatoid arthritis, a disease in which inflammation leads to pain and swelling of the joints as well as loss of articular bone. In particular, Melissa’s work aims to understand the impact of inflammation on the impairment of osteoblasts, bone building cells, within the joint and the mechanisms that may stimulate the repair of inflammation-induced bone loss.
