How to Apply to UMass Fitchburg!




Thank you for your interest in the UMass Chan Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency!

Applicants wishing to be considered for an interview need to submit the required application materials as listed below:

Program Specific Application Requirements

• ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) application
• Medical school transcript indicating medical school graduation within five years 
• Three or more letters of reference with at least one being from a Family Medicine Physician
• Passing score on USMLE 1 or COMLEX 1. Passing scores on USMLE STEP 2 CK or COMLEX 2 CE


Additional Considerations

  • Demonstrated interest in the discipline of family medicine
  • Demonstrated interest in care for the underserved and community service
  • Language skills relevant to our community population (such as Spanish, Portuguese, French Creole, etc.)
  • Interest in serving the population of Central Massachusetts

 International Graduate Requirements

  • Certification by ECFMG
    • Non-U.S. Citizens must be willing to obtain a valid J1 visa
  • Minimum of 6 months of prior U.S. or equivalent clinical experience with significant patient care responsibility to include:

     Direct patient contact
     History taking
     Physical examinations
     Development of differential diagnoses
     Identification of relevant clinical findings
     Problem assessments
     Formulation of management plans
     Observerships/externships which do not include the above cannot be accepted

 General Eligibility Requirements

  • Credentialing: All applicants must be able to meet the joint UMass Chan/UMMMC Graduate Medical Education credentialing requirements before an appointment can be finalized.
  • Compliance: All applicants MUST be willing to meet the:
    • Adherence to the bloodborne pathogen policy
    • Compliance with any other Residency/Fellowship program-specific technical standards
    • Completion/signing of the UMass Chan Medical School Graduate Medical Education Appointment Agreement
    • Abiding by the provisions stated within the GME Personnel Policies
  • Employee Health: All applicants must be able to meet all employee health clearance requirements including required immunizations, screening and pre-employment drug testing (pay careful attention to FLU and COVID vaccine mandates currently in place).
  • Applicants applying with a previous or current GME position:  Any applicant seeking to transfer to a UMass Chan Medical School program or change specialties MUST submit a letter of recommendation from ALL previous program directors and the current program director before receiving a GME appointment.

2022-23 Interview Season

Virtual interviews for the 2022-2023 season will be scheduled through ERAS self-scheduler by invitation.

Invitations will be sent out to applicants on Thursdays.

If a response is not received by the following Monday, the interview spot may be given to the next prospective candidate.

The option to waitlist for a specific date is available.

Interviews will be conducted on Wednesdays from October 2022- January 2023.

*Please note that only complete applications that include all the required criteria listed above will receive an invitation.

**With the exception of Step 2 score. We will invite applicants to interview without a Step 2 score but passing score must be updated to complete ERAS application prior to ranking.

NRMP policy requires that each training program provide complete and accurate information to interviewees, including a sample contract and the institution's policies on visa status and eligibility for appointment to a residency or fellowship position, as applicable.
