Resident as Teacher

The Department of Dermatology recognizes the importance of teaching as a critical component of a physician’s lifelong commitment to learning.  Under the guidance of Dr. Belazarian, UMass Chan Medical School integrates dermatology into the second-year curriculum through a didactic lecture series. Residents have the opportunity to participate both in editing and presenting these lectures.  Additionally, residents run a surgical hands on series teaching basic procedural skills to first and second year medical students.  

Residents are responsible for much of the instruction for rotating third and fourth year medical students, medicine residents, family practice residents and pediatric residents. As medical students rotate through the Department of Dermatology, residents precept in clinic and provide feedback to medical students on the consultation service. Our second and third year residents give regular lectures to other departments such as internal medicine and family medicine as well as talks to community physicians.  While more junior residents precept medical students, chief residents lead weekly didactics for residents.  Each Friday the chief residents review assigned reading in Bolognia’s textbook Dermatology.  In addition to text review, chief residents aid in preparation for MOC boards and the Dermatology board exam.
