Shianne Walls is an Ambulatory Services Representative at the UMass Memorial Diabetes Center of Excellence. She was nominated by a colleague via UMatter Central, a systemwide online recognition platform which gives UMass Memorial caregivers the opportunity to show appreciation for fellow caregivers.

Shianne began working in health care when she joined the rescue squad as a first responder in her hometown at the age of 16. She became an EMT, worked as a CNA in nursing homes, and in a hospital emergency room.

The role of an Ambulatory Services Representative is to check patients in and out before and after their appointments in the diabetes clinic. “People see me before they leave to schedule their follow-up appointments,” Shianne said. “I also work with insurance companies to obtain prior–authorizations as needed, and to arrange any necessary tests and procedures.”

Shianne biggest inspiration is her grandfather. “He was my hero and being a Worcester firefighter, he was everyone’s hero,” she proudly stated. “He would do anything for anyone and never expect anything in return.”

Like her grandfather before her, Shianne enjoys helping others. “Even if I can make a small difference in their life, then I feel I did my job,” she said.

Shianne currently works full time in the UMass Memorial diabetes clinic, while raising three children, ages 6, 13 and 15, and also attending nursing school.

"My goal is to show my children that hard work pays off and when you put your mind to something, you can reach your goals and dreams!"
