Clinical Training

Our fellows receive extensive training in outpatient and consultative Endocrinology through the two main campuses of UMass Memorial Health Care.

Ambulatory Clinics

Fellows have 2 continuity clinics in Endocrinology and a weekly Diabetes clinic. In addition, fellows rotate through various faculty clinics in Endocrinology and Diabetes.

The division of Endocrinology has active outpatient clinics treating common endocrine disorders, such as thyroid and metabolic bone diseases as well as pituitary, reproductive, parathyroid and adrenal diseases. We attract patients from central Massachusetts and the greater New England region.

The Diabetes Center of Excellence provides a full range of diagnostic and evaluation services for patients with diabetes mellitus. We supervise day to day care for over 400 patients on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (pump therapy). UMMHC has been awarded Program Recognition by the American Diabetes Association. This prestigious competitive award is given in testament to excellence in care of persons with diabetes.

The Adult Endocrinology clinic, the Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic and the Diabetes Center of Excellence are located on the second floor of the newly inaugurated Ambulatory Care Center at the University Campus. This state-of-the-art building opened in August 2010, and blends patient care, teaching and cutting-edge research within. Our facilities include point of care testing, on-site diabetes education facilities, retinal photography, two dedicated ultrasound/biopsy rooms, and a 3-bed infusion center for IV therapy and for endocrine dynamic testing.

Fellows also rotate through clinics in reproductive endocrinology, menopause, and High Risk Pregnancy clinic at MemorialHospital. During their elective months, they rotate through pediatric endocrinology and Lipid clinics.  Working with the Division of Nuclear Medicine, endocrine fellows are closely involved with thyroid/whole body scans and radioactive iodine therapy. Fellows also have an opportunity to attend diabetes camps at the ClaraBartonCenter in the summer.

Inpatient Experience

The majority of inpatient clinical experience occurs at the University campus. This consists mostly of consultative endocrinology. Fellows rotate through this service for a total of 3-4 months per year, taking at-home call in two-week blocks. Fellows also see some inpatient consults at the Memorial campus, but do not participate in at-home or weekend call during that block.
