Fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound

The UMass Chan Medical School Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound open to board certified/board eligible emergency physicians. Fellowship focuses on technical performance, interpretation of ultrasound, and administrative/programmatic development, as well as special attention to ultrasound research and development of new technologies. While particular attention is paid to the primary applications of Emergency Ultrasound, identified by the American College of Emergency Physicians, advanced topics such as MSK, advanced cardiac, ophthalmic, and dynamic volume status assessment, etc. are taught. |

Education
The UMass Ultrasound Fellow benefits from a multifaceted and multidisciplinary learning environment benefiting from:

Emergency Ultrasound faculty at UMass include nationally recognized experts in the field with core teaching provided by six dedicated faculty.
Quality Assurance
UMass reviews 100% of the scans that are performed at 5 separate Emergency Departments, performing QA from 7 separate machines.
Fellow participation in the maintenance of our home grown QA workflow solution as well as participation in Image Review, which occurs every day Monday – Friday provides a unique experience for fellows.
Image Review format varies to provide a breadth of experience and promote fellow and resident education. The Ultrasound Fellow gets 1:1 dedicated image review time with fellowship director and experienced faculty, but also has the opportunity to lead image review sessions for residents/medical students.
Programmatic Administration
Fellows graduate with all the tools necessary
to be a leader in the field in Emergency Ultrasound in a community hospital or academic setting. The fellow attends the New England Regional and National ACEP Ultrasound Management courses.
Fellows also participate in the running of the Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound Program at UMass, and participate in the daily operations of long established UMass Emergency Ultrasound program.
There is focused attention to administration, billing, coding, and reimbursement, all of which are essential pieces to the puzzle of running a successful ultrasound program.
International Ultrasound
UMass has established relationships with the Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where we have worked over a 3 year period to education faculty and develop research; and with Nyakibale Hospital in rural southwestern Uganda.

We have traveled to Cambodia to provide teaching, hands on instruction, programmatic support, and have performed Quality Assurance for Angkor Hospital for Children.
Ultrasound Courses
In conjunction with the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, the Ultrasound Fellow can participate in the planning and execution of a regional ultrasound course for attending emergency physicians, residents, and medical students.
Fellows also teach at regional, national, and international ultrasound courses, all with the mentorship of current ultrasound faculty.
Periodically, the UMass Ultrasound Division is asked to teach local community emergency medicine groups, which is always an excellent experience for fellows.
Research
Research is an important component of a career in academic emergency medicine. Many of the ultrasound faculty are widely published in the field of emergency ultrasound and are currently involved with multiple projects. During the one-year fellowship, the fellow will have an opportunity to be a vital participant in ongoing research endeavors, have the opportunity to develop their own research initiatives, and will develop the skills necessary to design and conduct their own students in the future. The fellow will also attend and potentially present research at national meetings of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine. In addition to exposure to current research, these meetings offer the chance to become active in the national arena through emergency ultrasound section meetings.
