Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allies Accomplishments for 2017

Monday, July 10, 2017

This past academic year was full of accomplishments for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Committee. In September, the 5th annual Convocation Luncheon took place with more than 85 participants. UMMS students, faculty, staff, and leadership learned about discourse on LGBT awareness for bisexual individuals. The committee collaborated with UMMS nursing, medical students, and UMMHC patient experience department to develop a plan for LGBT Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). The committee increased its social presence and community engagement by appearing on Charter3 TV’s New England Pride TV with a segment titled, Health in the LGBT Community. This appearance also promoted UMMS and UMMHC as allies to the LGBT community. The group participated in the 2016 Population Health Clerkship: Access to Quality Health Care and Services Event. Increasing cultural competence and enhancing cultural identity were two of the main goals for this past year for co-chairs, Shawn Morrissey and Kenneth Peterson. The committee expressed these goals by facilitating a lunch and learn documentary film: Genderf*kation: A Gender Emancipation of UMMS and UMMHC. This event included a panel discussion with allies and transgender individuals from the community. The group also sponsored an annual lecture on LGBT health and implemented an ongoing LGBT cultural competency curriculum for Gradu ate Students of Nursing. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Allies Accomplishments for 2017
