The Disabilities Committee hosted several events this year. The committee hosted an ASL Training Session in September for Emergency department employees. There was an Assistive Technology Expo and an Assistive Technology Library Exhibit in October which showcased a variety of products that aid people with disabilities in everyday life. The committee hosted a Veterans with Disabilities and Employment Session in November. In June, the committee co-sponsored the book reading event of Laughing at My Nightmare by Shane Burcaw with the Civilities Committee. The group also continued their work on the Access @ Work Task Force. This Task Force is designed to bring accessible electronic communication for the entire campus. Some of the goals for the upcoming year, as expressed by co-chairs Linda Long and Melissa Anderson, are to increase awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act by showing a film, have more programs related to living with disabilities, and make continuous efforts to make UMass an “Employer of Choice” for people with disabilities.
