Deborah L. Plummer, PhD
Vice Chancellor, Diversity and Inclusion
Deborah L. Plummer, PhD, serves as vice chancellor of diversity and inclusion at UMass Medical School and professor of psychiatry and quantitative health sciences and in the Graduate School of Nursing. As chief diversity officer for the medical school and clinical partner UMass Memorial Health Care, Dr. Plummer shapes and leads the embrace of diversity as fundamental to institutional excellence. She has primary responsibility for setting the vision and providing leadership, strategic direction and coordination of all aspects of affirmative action/equal opportunity commitment and regulatory compliance obligations. Additionally, the Diversity and Inclusion Office, as a center for excellence, is the primary vehicle for guiding the implementation of cross-institutional diversity strategies and programs. Working collaboratively with UMMS and UMass Memorial leadership, Plummer develops and executes a coordinated and comprehensive diversity plan that cultivates an inclusive academic health sciences center.
She has held past roles as a staff psychologist, hospital system chief diversity officer, university professor, founding director of a graduate degree program in diversity management, and principal consultant for D.L. Plummer & Associates, which provided diversity and change management strategies for more than 80 organizations in the United States and the United Kingdom. As vice chancellor of diversity and inclusion, Plummer has a core role in preserving and enhancing a culture of respect, civility and high performance.
