Nese Kurt-Yilmaz awarded Beatson Foundation grant

Date Posted: Thursday, September 30, 2021

Nese Kurt YilmazBMP faculty member Dr. Nese Kurt-Yilmaz and collaborator Dr. Stephan Kissler of Joslin Diabetes Center were recipients of a new grant from the Beatson Foundation “Passion to Find a Cure” Program for type 1 diabetes. The grant supports the development of a new drug to target a gene called renalase. The collaboration between the teams has already found that inhibition of renalase with a repurposed drug protects insulin-producing cells against autoimmune attack that causes type 1 diabetes (10.1038/s42255-020-0254-1). The researchers will now follow up on this promising result toward a potent and specific drug for the prevention and treatment of type 1 diabetes.
