Date Posted: Monday, August 30, 2021

Welcome message by C. Robert Matthews, PhD, Professor & Chair

Sy Redding, PhDI am delighted to welcome Sy Redding as the new assistant professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Department. Sy joins us in September after obtaining his PhD in Chemical Physics at Columbia in 2015 and then serving as a Chandler Fellow at UC San Francisco. Sy’s research focus will be on the mesoscale properties of chromatin as it undergoes condensation reactions that are a part of its natural functions in cells. Using optical methods to follow condensation and compaction, he plans to discover the how the associated molecular mechanisms respond to post-translational modification of DNA and histones and the presence of other associated protein factors. A second goal is to discover how distinct chromosomal domains arise and are maintained. Sy will strengthen our biophysics program, enhance our optical spectroscopy technology and bring an exciting new dimension in chromatin biology to our department.
