Janelle Hayes, a graduate student in Dr. Brian Kelch’s lab, has been awarded an F31 fellowship from the NIH. Janelle’s project entitled “The Mechanism and Regulation of ATP Hydrolysis in a Viral Genome Packaging Motor” will be studying the regulation and coordination of ATP hydrolysis in viral packaging motors. Viral motors are critical components of viral replication and maturation, however little is known about how they couple ATP hydrolysis to DNA packaging. Using a multidisciplinary approach involving cryoEM, x-ray crystallography, and numerous biochemical and biophysical techniques, Janelle will further elucidate viral motor mechanism.
