This year’s GSBS Awards were held last Friday as part of the newly minted “Commencement Weekend” Ceremonies. Several GSBS Alumni gathered with current students and UMMS Faculty in the Faculty Conference Room to celebrate student achievement at UMMS. Chancellor Collins started the celebration by awarding Can Kayatekin the 2010 Chancellor’s Award, which is given to one student in each of the schools in recognition of academic excellence, influential leadership, and strong community service. Can, who is defending his thesis Tuesday, June 15th, pulled off the daily double, winning the Dean’s Award for the Most Insightful Doctoral Thesis Research. Can’s thesis research examined the coupling of protein folding, zinc binding and disulfide bond formation in superoxide dismutase. This work, performed in the Matthews Lab, has provided basic insight into the role of superoxide dismutase in ALS.
Jay Sage, a graduate student in the Knight Lab, received the Dean’s Award for the Most Insightful Mid-thesis Research. Jay’s research examines the role of DNA repair proteins in the mitochondria. Jay recent work breaks away from the genomic-centric view of DNA repair and has revealed a new role for recombinational repair proteins in the cell. Bo Han, a third year graduate student in Phil Zamore’s lab, was honored for his academic excellence in the GSBS Core course. BMP graduate students were also acknowledged for their contributions to teaching in the GSBS curriculum. Karen Mruk and Steve Pauff, Kobertz and Miller Labs, respectively, were both recognized for their Outstanding Mentoring in the Classroom or Research Setting.
Congratulations to all of our GSBS award winners and 2010 graduates!!!
