Dr. Summer Thyme and her postdoc Dr. Anna Moyer were featured by UMass Chan for their exciting NIH Transformative Research Award. The BMB has spoken – spoons are the best kitchen utensil! If you have a dissenting opinion, get in touch with Dr. Haley Barlow to volunteer as a department feature to tip the scales for the next year. At the end of each interview, Haley asks the department feature what their favorite kitchen utensil is, and some people’s answers may surprise you! Check them all out at this link.

August is Transgender History month in California (the history behind this is very interesting). While UMass is not located in California, this celebration across the country inspired this month’s wellness topic: Educating Ourselves about the Contributions of Transgender Scientists.
Transgender people have always existed, and science wouldn’t be the same without them. Below is a sampling of transgender scientists and their contributions to their fields.

|
AlanL. Hart, MD – (1890 - 1962) – Dr. Hart pioneered the use of x-ray to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) before symptoms arose. This innovation helped to limit spread of TB, saving countless lives.
