UMass Memorial has a very strong transplant program. Several kidney transplants (living donors and deceased donors), kidney/pancreas, liver transplants (living donors and decreased donors) and pancreas transplants are done yearly and the numbers are increasing each year. The pathophysiology of end-stage organ disease requires specialized experience and understanding, as do the unique technical aspects of the transplant procedure, which is why highly trained transplant anesthesiologists are integral members of the transplant team.
In addition, UMass Memorial is one of the top medical centers in New England for the procurement of organs and tissues. The anesthesia department is involved in the donation process and the procurement process of donors that are declared brain dead. Click here to read more about organ donation at UMass Memorial.
