Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences ~ Dean's Council Funds
Dean’s Fund – Area of greatest need
From developing effective training and educational programs of the highest quality, to obtaining the best training and research equipment available, and putting them in the best facilities the Dean’s priorities are numerous and evolving. They are within reach, but only with your help.
Your gift to the Dean’s Fund is an investment in the future of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the biomedical scientists who will be trained here. Your gift is an investment in the future of health.
Student Conference and Travel
An excellent and collaborative academic program provided in top-notch facilities is the foundation of a quality biomedical sciences graduate education. Rounding out that education is important, which is why GSBS students are encouraged to attend national and international conferences. In fact, some prestigious conferences are invitation only.
Your gift will help more GSBS students attend prominent conferences, which means they will benefit by learning from others—and by sharing their work with the world.
Career Development (BEST Program)
The biomedical sciences job market is challenging. Nationally, less than 25% of today’s PhDs can secure tenure-track faculty positions. Others aren’t sure where to apply their skills and efforts.
In 2013, UMass Medical School was one of 10 institutions nationwide awarded an inaugural Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) grant. A special project funded by the NIH Office of the Director’s Common Fund, our program integrates formal career planning into students’ training. It guides students and postdocs to create and implement a strategic plan for reaching their career objectives, and connects them with PhD scientists in their areas of interest. Our program has been recognized nationally for its impact and innovation.
Your gift will ensure support the growth of this vital program, helping GSBS students and postdocs launch successful research careers.
Pathway to Graduate Study Program
For students seeking a career in biomedical research, the Pathway to Graduate Study Program (PGSP) offers an outstanding opportunity to enhance student academic preparedness and laboratory-based or clinical research experience. The result is a graduate who is competitive for admission into top-tier graduate programs. It is also a powerful pathway for increasing diversity in our student body.
Admitted students take a core curriculum of graduate courses and a simultaneous year-long, mentored, research experience. This allows students to focus on developing their research skills and acquiring the foundational academic knowledge necessary to undertake leading-edge biomedical research. Successful students are recommended for admission into PhD programs of the GSBS at UMMS for the following fall semester.
Your gift will support the dreams, aspirations and academic goals of aspiring young scientists, enabling them to gain access to one of the nation’s top PhD programs.
Named for UMass Medical School’s founding dean, the Lamar Soutter Library (LSL) is a welcoming and vital space for all students, providing support for education and research. LSL subscribes to an extensive array of print and electronic journals, and offers a number of electronic indexes, abstracts and databases, including numerous rare books; a reserve collection supplements faculty lecture assignments and readings. It also serves as the National Library of Medicine’s New England Regional Medical Library, one of eight such regional libraries nationwide. Your gift will ensure that this valuable resource remains current and available to all students.
