Barre Family Health Center

Our Center

What We Offer

Residents at the Barre Family Health Center practice the full range of family medicine. Well child care, prenatal care, adult health maintenance, occupational health, and school health education programs are all important aspects of the curriculum. House calls are commonplace. Residents also have ample opportunity to learn and perform minor surgical procedures including vasectomy, colposcopy, sigmoidoscopy, skin excision, and cryosurgery. The "emergency room" at the health center is where residents see a significant amount of minor trauma cases including lacerations, sprains, fractures, and burns. As the first responders to many local emergencies, they learn to stabilize critically ill patients for ambulance transport, and continue to develop knowledge of orthopedic casting techniques and wound care management. Inpatients are admitted to Memorial Health Care, located 23 miles from the center. All health center obstetrical patients are delivered there by their own resident with backup from health center faculty.

The Communities We Serve

Barre is a picturesque New England town 20 miles northwest of Worcester. While Barre developed as an industrial town, most of the surrounding communities have their roots in agriculture and dairy farming. The population consists of a large number of long-term residents tied to local industry and family farms and a growing number of newcomers who prefer to live in the country and commute to work in a variety of directions.

Our Commitment to Residents

Noontime conferences, specialty consultations, and medical students enhance the academic environment at the health center. Each day is concluded by "chart rounds" - informal case presentations of patients seen that day, attended by all faculty and residents in the center. The health center is proud to have an outstanding office staff supportive of the concepts of family medicine training. The faculty consists of six Board-Certified Family Physicians with more than sixty years of combined experience in Family Medicine, two psychologists, a nutritionist, and a podiatrist. Monthly meetings are scheduled with visiting community and university department faculty from family medicine, cardiology, psychiatry, and obstetrics-gynecology.
