About the Event
The UMass 5K is an annual family event that is open to the general public. Participants can take part in either a 5K competitive run or a 5K non-competitive walk. In addition to the race/walk, there is child entertainment such as face painting, PolkaDot the Clown, balloon animals, music, raffles, and more.
All proceeds from the event are donated to the Child Life Program at UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center. The Child Life Program helps pediatric patients and their families through hospitalization and painful procedures by creating a child-friendly and family-centered environment. They offer play opportunities, pre-procedure preparation, special events, tutoring, and also have a pet visitor program. For more information about the Child Life Program, please visit their website.
The UMass 5K has raised over $10,000 for the Child Life Program which has been used for a Starlight & Nintendo Fun Center, bereavement materials, and other various supplies. The event has also generated donations of 2 laptops & a PC which are used by the patients in the Pediatric inpatient unit.
