The UMass Surgical Outcomes Analysis & Research group has developed a number of tools to help predict outcomes after operations, including in-hospital mortality and complications. These "risk scores" stratify patients in various settings according to their specific characteristics and circumstances. Please note that these resources are intended as research tools; they describe national averages only, and the estimates they provide must be interpreted in context by an experienced clinician. Dr. Jessica Simons, UMass resident, received 2nd place at the New England Surgical Society Resident Essay Competition, on September 12, 2009, for "Surgery and Radiation Therapy for Abdominal and Retroperitoneal Sarcoma: Both Necessary and Sufficient?"


Melissa Murphy, UMass surgery resident, won the Resident and Fellows Award at the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Chicago, June 1st 2009 for her project "Major complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy-a simple risk score". This prestigious award carries a $1000 prize.
