Jillian Smith, UMass Surgical Resident, had her abstract "Potential Benefit of Resection for Stage IV Gastric Cancer" judged to be one of the top 23 submitted abstracts for the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract meeting in New Orleans, May 2010. She will present both at the Plenary Session and compete at the Resident and Fellows Conference. Melissa Murphy, UMass Surgical Resident, won the top prize for her Short Oral talk in 2009.

11/23/2009: Congratulations to
Zheng (Frank) Zhou, MD, internal medicine resident, who received the first place award in the resident research poster competition at the American College of Physician's Massachusetts Medical Society Annual Meeting recently. His presentation, “Anti-VEGF and Anti-EGFR Monoclonal Antibodies in the First-line Therapy for Metastatic Colorectal Cancer - A Meta-analysis,” is coauthored by oncologists Drs. William Walsh, Venu Bathini and Bilal Piperdi. Dr. Zhou will compete at the national level at the American College of Physician's Internal Medicine Conference in Toronto in April.

6/1/2009: Melissa Murphy, UMass surgery resident, won the Resident and Fellows Award at the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Chicago, June 1st 2009 for her project "Major complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy-a simple risk score". This prestigious award carries a $1000 prize.
3/17/2009: Thanks to efforts by
Laura Lambert, MD, our newest surgical oncologist, Governor Patrick declared the last day of February as Rare Disease Day in Massachusetts. The proclamation calls attention to the public health issues associated with rare diseases. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are nearly 7,000 such diseases affecting nearly 30 million Americans. Dr. Lambert notes she will now wk toward permanently establishing February 28 as Rare Disease Day in Massachusetts.
