The Department of Surgery of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, chaired by Demetrius Litwin, MD, is an academic surgical program located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Clinical care encompasses the three main campuses of UMass Memorial Medical Center (University, Memorial, and Hahnemann), as well as affiliated hospitals. The department is committed to providing state-of- the-art surgical care to patients from throughout the New England region. In addition, this busy and growing department is actively involved with advancing the art of surgery, through research focused on new approaches to patient care, as well as surgical training and education of the next generation of surgeons.

Jillian Smith, UMass Surgical Resident, had her abstract "Potential Benefit of Resection for Stage IV Gastric Cancer" judged to be one of the top 23 submitted abstracts for the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract meeting in New Orleans, May 2010. She will present both at the Plenary Session and compete at the Resident and Fellows Conference. Melissa Murphy, UMass Surgical Resident, won the top prize for her Short Oral talk in 2009.
