The Department of Surgery of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, chaired by Demetrius Litwin, MD, is an academic surgical program located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Clinical care encompasses the three main campuses of UMass Memorial Medical Center (University, Memorial, and Hahnemann), as well as affiliated hospitals. The department is committed to providing state-of- the-art surgical care to patients from throughout the New England region. In addition, this busy and growing department is actively involved with advancing the art of surgery, through research focused on new approaches to patient care, as well as surgical training and education of the next generation of surgeons.

Dr. Elizaveta Ragulin-Coyne, UMass Surgical Research Resident, was appointed in the inaugural class of UMMS Clinical Translational Scholars for 2010-2012. 

The Society of Surgical Oncology selected Surgery Resident Jillian Smith’s entry, Adjuvant Therapy for Resectable Pancreatic Cancer: A Simple Prediction Rule, as the “Best Poster” submitted to the SSO’s Resident/Fellow Essay Contest at the  63rd Annual Cancer Symposium in St. Louis, MO.
