Division of Vascular Surgery

Welcome to the Division of Vascular Surgery at UMass Medical School and the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence at UMassMemorial Medical Center.

Treatment at the vascular center emphasizes the prevention of peripheral vascular disease through patient education, exercise, and counseling services for smoking cessation and dietary modification. Most vascular disease can be diagnosed relatively easily on the basis of the patient's symptoms and a physical examination by a vascular specialist. Further diagnostic information is often gained through non-invasive ultrasound testing in our Vascular Laboratory, or radiological imaging such as MRI, CT scanning or angiography. The majority of patients with symptoms of vascular disease can now be treated by means other than a surgical operation through the use of medication, exercise or with minimally invasive endovascular procedures such as angioplasty or stent graft placement. When an operation is the best form of treatment, patients typically undergo a preliminary evaluation of their heart, lung and kidneys to ensure that they can tolerate the stress of the operation safely.

The second goal of our team is to foster research to understand better the causes of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and the way in which blood vessels react to surgical operations and endovascular stent placement. The laboratory for basic vascular science is located on the University Campus and is staffed by two research physicians and two post-doctoral fellows. Funding for research is provided by the University of Massachusetts Medical School, industrial sponsors and private philanthropy. The Vascular Center also has had a strong interest in the development of new medications for the treatment of peripheral vascular disease. The Center has been involved in more than two dozen clinical trials of investigational medications over the past 20 years.

The third, and not the least important function of the group, is to provide education about vascular disease at all levels ranging from the general public, to patients, to medical students and at the post-graduate level. This website has been designed to be used by anyone seeking information about vascular disease, as well as by those wishing to learn more about the related educational and research activities at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
