Goals
To attract under-represented, disadvantaged and disabled students into biomedical and behavioral research careers in the area of heart, lung and blood disorders.
To increase the number of applicants from target groups to the Graduate School of Biomedical Science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
The NIH Summer Research Program is a non-credit, ten-week, structured research experience. The program consists of "hands-on" laboratory research experience with an investigator serving as a mentor, role model and advisor.
The program is designed to provide participants in-depth exposure to actual scientific research in the hopes that the excitement, challenge and creativity of the enterprise will convince them to consider research in the sciences as a viable career choice.
APPLICATIONS
Applications must be submitted online. Applications will be available on November 1st 2007.
The application submission deadline is March 16, 2008 including supplemental application materials.
Research Fellows are placed in laboratories for ten weeks at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center with the investigator serving as a mentor, role model and advisor.
NIH Research Fellows are reimbursed up to $500. for travel to and from Worcester. Housing is arranged at local college dormitories and is heavily subsidized by the program. Participants receive a stipend of $4000. over a ten week period.
NIH Research Fellows are required to attend all seminars, lectures, group discussions, luncheon lectures, socializers,field trips and live in the dormitories. You are also expected to attend the full ten week program. If the beginning conflicts with final exams, arrangements can be made to have the examinations administered at UMMS utilizing the in house examination service.
NIH Research Fellows are required to create and present a professionally prepared scientific poster.
Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Participants must also meet ONE of the following edibility requirements:
- Member of a racial or ethnic group under-represented in biomedical research ( African American, Native American [Hawaiian and Alaskan] and Hispanic/Latino
- Family meets criteria for disadvantaged (economic or educational) status
- Presently receive accommodations under the American With Disabilities Act
