INCOMING STUDENTS SUMMER ORIENTATION

Summer Orientation for the Class of 2012
Saturday, May 31, 2008
Congratulations on your acceptance to UMass. We're anxiously awaiting your arrival.
We have been planning for your Summer Orientation which will be held on Saturday, May 31st. The Orientation is an informal program geared toward giving you an opportunity to meet our current first year medical students, faculty and the accepted students of the Class of 2011. You are more than welcome to bring your family / friends / significant other; however, we suggest you bring your own car as the Class of 2010 will be hosting an ‘After Orientation Get Together’ at Boston Billiards for the Class of 2011 immediately following the Orientation.
The Orientation will be structured as such:
- Registration is scheduled from 9:45 - 11:00 in the Faculty Conference Room — which is right off the Medical School Lobby. During Registration, the current first year students will host a Q & A table, members of MOE: Massachusetts Outdoor Experience [flyer/information below] will also have a table there to answer questions and give you an opportunity to sign up for the MOE trip which is planned for August 1 – 4. Members from AMSA (American Medical School Association) will also have a table set up where you can purchase a “Med School” tee shirt which will help support our AMSA Chapter. Please stop by and ask any questions you may have.
- During the Registration time period, we've invited some of the local condo complexes near UMass to be here. These condos are very convenient and many first year students typically end up living in them; however don't feel rushed to sign anything. If you have the time, talk to current first year students and check out the various properties around Worcester, many are advertised on the bulletin board across from the Student Lounge. There are some great housing opportunities that are very affordable in the Worcester area.
- At 10:15, the current first year students have prepared a presentation on roommates and housing for you. This presentation will take place in Amp I [on the 2nd and 3rd Floors of the Medical School]. Your guests will have the option of going on a tour of UMass and will re-join you in Amp I after their tour ends at 11:00.
- Tour for guests. This is very similar to the tour you were given when you interviewed here. Tours will begin in the Medical School Lobby at 10:15 and will last approximately 45 minutes.
- From 11:00 – 11:50, our formal presentation will begin in Amp 1 with a number of senior faculty members who are very eager to introduce themselves to you and give an overview of what their role at UMass is and how they'll be available to support you over the course of your medical education. We'll also briefly discuss a few of the opportunities and support systems we have in place for our students.
- From 12:00 – 1:15 we've planned a BBQ where you'll be able to meet your second year buddy as well as other accepted students.
- From 1:30 – 2:45, the first year medical students have planned presentations / skits to give you a look into the life of a medical student at UMass and what opportunities and experiences await you.
Following the Orientation, the first year medical students have arranged a ‘get together’ at Boston Billiards ( www.bostonbilliardclub.com) 545 Grove St Worcester, MA 01605
(508) 852-2121). They sincerely hope you’ll be able to attend this as well. It’s a great opportunity to meet the current first year students as well as the accepted members of the Class of 2011.
