Electives: US Visiting Students

Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts Medical School and/or our affiliated hospitals. We invite fourth year medical students attending Allopathic and Osteopathic accredited medical schools in the USA, Canada and Puerto Rico to apply for our wide range of electives. 

Elective Information

  • UMass electives are offered in four-week blocks of time.
  • The approved Elective Calendar is posted on the left menu under Elective Calendars.
  • A maximum of 2 four-week electives [8 weeks] are allowed per student each academic year.
  • Elective months May and June are not offered to Visiting Students.
  • UMass will begin accepting applications on April 1st; however, applications will not be considered until May 1st. Priority in scheduling electives is given to UMass students until May 1st of each academic year. All applications received before May 1st will be keep on file and processed in the order in which they were received. 
  • Elective Applications must be processed through the Office of Student Affairs to receive credit.
  • Elective applications should be submitted at least eight weeks before the start date of the requested elective.

Electives Offered/Administrative Fee

  • A list of all UMass electives can be found on the left menu in Elective List.
  • A $65 non-refundable administrative fee is assessed for each approved elective. Payment should be made payable to 'UMMS Electives' and is expected within ten [10] days of the elective being accepted.

Visting Students from Allopathic/LCME & Osteopathic/AOA Accredited Schools

Please note that starting Academic Year 2012- 2013 applications will only be accpepted through VSAS (the Visiting Student Application Service)
http://services.aamc.org/20/vsas/ for both Osteopathic and Allopathic visiting students. Online application must include:

  • Home School verification of the student’s statements of: Good Standing, HIPAA & OSHA Training, BLS Training, Personal Health Insurance, Malpractice/Liability Insurance Limits and Passing Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1.
  • CV
  • Official Transcript
  • Photo
  • Complete the UMMS Visiting Student Immunization Record Form & attach your lab reports, documenting proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella/Chicken Pox and Hepatitis B. Along with proof of a TB Test within one year to arrival of rotation.

If your application is APPROVED

  • You will be sent an e-mail elective offer containing your approved elective's report to information.
  • This offer will be valid for five (5) business days.
  • You will be required to 'accept' this offer before the deadline, or the offer will expire. 

If your application is NOT approved
We make every effort to accommodate elective requests, however there are occasions when applications cannot be honored. If your elective was not approved, you will be notified by e-mail with an explanation of why your application was denied. 

Cancellations
If you are unable to report to your approved elective, you must e-mail the elective coordinator and Janice Robert [ Janice.Robert@umassmed.edu ] at least 1 month prior to the start of the elective.

Housing
UMMS does not provide housing; however, we often have information on available sublets.  If you'd like a copy of this information, please e-mail

Evaluation Forms
Please give a copy of your school's Evaluation Form directly to the Coordinator of the approved elective. The Office of Student Affairs does not handle evaluations.
 
Parking & Picture ID Badges
For all electives at the University Campus, you will be required to obtain a Picture ID Badge from the Public Safety Office on Level A of the Hospital room HA-531(508.856.3630). ID badges cost $10.
  • Parking on the University Campus for 4 weeks is $32 or $8 per week.  The Public Safety Office only takes cash or checks. Visiting Students are assigned parking at the Plantation Street Parking garage which is a 1/4 mile from the campus. Student can either walk the 6 to 8 minutes to the main campus or take the shuttle. The shuttle runs every 7 to 10 minutes from the garage to the Third Road drop off, weekdays from 5:30 am  to 9: 00 pm.  See additional parking information and campus map in the Visiting Student Orientation booklet on our website or go to www.umassmed.edu/parking/index.aspx.
