Elective Description: This one month elective will provide medical students with a broad experience in the combined disciplines of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Students will work directly with attending Umass-Memorial Med/Peds faculty in the primary care offices located in either Westborough or Spencer. However, although this elective is primarily organized as an outpatient experience, students may also choose to spend time with Med/Peds faculty in Infectious Disease (Dr Laura Gibson), Critical Care (Dr. Yuka Vinagre), and/or less formally with any of the 12 UMass Med/Peds faculty. Students will be expected to interview and examine both adult and pediatric patients with acute and chronic medical problems, and to present cases to attending physicians. Students will be encouraged to formulate broad differential diagnosis and devise treatment and diagnostic plans of action. Didactic sessions will be patient and problem specific, based on patients seen by the student and will occur at a minimum of once per week. Since the attending physician may also have patients admitted to inpatient internal medicine or pediatric services, students are encouraged to round with the attending physician prior to office appointments in order to provide a more complete perspective on the outpatient primary care experience. |
