Elective Description: The cardiac surgical service treats patients with serious diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system. Considering the complexity of the cases and specialty postoperative management approaches, the medical student’s operative exposure be limited. Every effort will be made to maximize this training opportunity according to each individual’s abilities.
Emphasis of this rotation is focused on understanding the indications for surgery / surgical procedure, anatomy and physiology correlated to physical exam findings and routine postoperative management of these patients.
The strength of the cardiac surgical program clearly lies with the educational component that can be gained by involvement and instruction in the overall care of the cardiac surgical patient. Performing common bedside procedures (epicardial wire removal and chest tube removal) are frequently performed and will be preformed with direct supervision during this rotation.
