Welcome!  We are excited that you are interested in our fellowship program!

The UMass Chan Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship is a twelve-month fellowship sponsored by the UMass Chan Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. It is open to graduates of ACGME-accredited residencies in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Med/Peds, and Pediatrics.  We offer three fellowship positions annually.

The fellowship program emphasizes all aspects of primary care sports and exercise medicine including fracture care; sports injury prevention; concussion management; ultrasound training; strength and conditioning; physical therapy; illness and injury related to exercise; physiology; nutrition; pharmacology; sports psychology and ethical/medical-legal aspects of exercise and sports medicine; and sports performance.

Enthusiastic Teaching Faculty

We have a strong and dedicated faculty that love to teach!  All our faculty have gone through a distinction in medical education program which includes didactic teaching and clinical teaching training.  Our fellowship distinguishes itself by having one of the largest CAQ faculty along with one of the most extensive and diverse team coverage experiences.  Our fellows have direct primary responsibility for training room rounds and game coverage for: public and private high schools; Division I, II, and III colleges and the Boston Red Sox Minor League system. The fellows' sporting event coverage includes the Bay State Games, the Falmouth Road Race, the Lake Placid Ironman, Killington Ski Clinic, and the Boston Marathon

Innovative Learning Opportunities and Dedicated Didactics

A core component to the fellowship is the extensive clinical experience gained at the UMass Memorial Sports Medicine Center. The Sports Medicine Center is a high volume, multi-disciplinary sports medicine center treating athletes of all ages and abilities from the recreational to the professional.  Scholarly work is emphasized throughout, including teaching residents and medical students, research opportunities, writing projects, presentations at regional and national conferences, and formal didactics.

Our fellowship has a unique depth and diversity of experiences that provides an unparalleled fellowship experience in a caring and supportive faculty environment.

For interested medical students and residents we offer visiting elective rotations.  Please contact me with any questions.

All the best,

Lee
