This program of study, offered by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), leads to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Areas of specialization include biomedical sciences, biochemistry & molecular biology, cell biology, cellular & molecular physiology, immunology & virology, molecular genetics & microbiology, neurosciences and pharmacology & molecular toxicology. The objectives of these programs are to train biomedical scientists/educators who will have a broad background in the medical sciences and who will be able to conduct research with direct relevance to human disease.
The GSBS program of study consists of a one-year non-departmentally based interdisciplinary core curriculum covering many aspects of biological chemistry, transfer of genetic information, cellular architecture and regulation, and multi-cellular systems and processes, as well as laboratory rotations. Specialization involves advanced course work, taken predominantly in the second year, successful completion of a qualifying examination and thesis research under the direction of GSBS faculty members. Financial assistance in the form of graduate and research assistantships is available to GSBS students.
