Physician as Communicator
Competency:
Our graduates build productive relationships with patients and their families, responding appropriately to their needs and preferences based on cultures, backgrounds and social systems.
Examples of behaviors our graduates use to demonstrate competence:
-
Communicate effectively during all stages of the physician-patient relationship: developing rapport, remaining attentive and responsive, bringing closure to the relationship when appropriate.
-
Use knowledge of the values and norms of major cultural and religious groups to provide culturally competent care.
-
Provide effective oral and written communications to health care colleagues, assuming the role of a teacher when appropriate.
