SOM Admissions
A Message from the Associate Dean for Admissions
As the Associate Dean of Admissions, I welcome you to our web site and would like to introduce you to our Admissions Home Page.
For many of you, the admissions process will be the first contact with our school. Potentially, it could prove to be the first step in an ongoing relationship. From medical school applicant to medical student and alumnus, this continuing relationship will begin with the Admissions office. Therefore, our office staff, our faculty, and the institution as a whole place a high priority on Admissions.
Embarking on a career in medicine requires that you make many important decisions, including your selection of a medical school. This web site is designed to provide you with insight into the values, philosophy, and methods that guide us in selecting those candidates who will best fulfill the mission of the University of Massachusetts. We ask you to take this opportunity to get to know us and determine for yourself if the University of Massachusetts suits your needs and aspirations. Wherever your career leads you, you should be well informed and feel supported in making decisions that are best for you.
Our school is committed to graduating physicians, who are well versed in all aspects of medicine and who are capable of fulfilling the role of a patient’s primary care physician. While most of our graduates go on to careers in primary care, we believe that a general medical background, grounded in science and emphasizing the importance of the doctor-patient relationship is the best introduction to any field of medical endeavor.
Our commitment to the science of medicine is reflected in our distinguished basic science and clinical faculties and the research programs at our institution. Research opportunities are available in all basic and clinical departments.
Students who are interested in a career as physician-investigators are encouraged to consider the combined PhD/MD Program.
We recommend that you carefully read the information we have provided on our web site. We also strongly urge you to contact your pre-medical advisor to assist you in making important decisions before you apply to medical school. We appreciate your interest in learning more about the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
