Leadership Fellowship Competencies

The Leadership Fellowship is designed to develop leadership knowledge, skills, and values in our Fellows. As a result of their participation in our program, Fellows will be able to:

  • assess current leadership skills and identify areas for further development
  • display effective interpersonal leadership skills
  • describe major institutions and organizations in the health care and social services arena
  • use research findings to inform practice and policy
  • describe social, economic, and political forces that influence past and current social and medical services and supports
  • consider the ethical dilemmas inherent in human services, science and technology fields
  • incorporate issues of cultural competence into thinking and practice
  • identify service/support gaps from a child-family point of view
  • analyze organizational behavior to achieve desired goals
  • design and implement evaluation strategies to analyze program/project outcomes
  • describe roles and potential of technology to advance program/policy/practice agendas
  • discuss interaction between legislation, policy, practice and resources
  • use working knowledge of broad disability law to promote policy and practical change
  • articulate a vision to guide change within an organization and/or community
  • explain MCHB, Title V, Healthy People 2010 and medical home goals and objectives and their roles in comprehensive care for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
  • describe elements of strategic and long-range planning, including financial and human resources management, program planning, and evaluation.
  • analyze an organization/community from a variety of perspectives in order to plan and implement change
  • identify own ethics and values
  • write and speak effectively for a variety of audiences
  • engage in team building activities and promote team development and collaboration
  • select and use conflict resolution strategies to achieve consensus
  • collaborate with agencies/organizations to help them realize their objectives
  • describe relationship between policy and practice and the day to day lives of children with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities and their families
  • devise and follow a plan for his/her own career development.
