Science To Go!
We believe, and research shows, that a centralized replenishment facility for districts implementing standards-based, inquiry-based science instruction is crucial to the viability of systemic science education reform.
There is a great need for a cost effective, easy system by which schools can replenish these curriculum units. In fact, the success of the science education reform effort depends on it. Much of the political, financial, philosophical groundwork is in place for success. However, this operational challenge has not been addressed in most districts. School districts are not organized to manage this aspect of science education reform well. Space is very limited in all districts in Massachusetts. Furthermore, the organizational trend to decentralize operations with individual schools making site-based decisions is not the most effective way to solve this problem. In this instance, a centralized operation is optimal in providing economy of scale and eliminating inequities in the system.
Science To Go! will collaborate with Massachusetts districts to develop a high quality refurbishment program for K-6 FOSS, Insights and STC standards-based curriculum units.
How does Science To Go! work?
We will provide the replenishment of consumable materials in FOSS, STC and Insights programs in a cost effective and efficient way. By purchasing in bulk locally and prepackaging them for classroom use, we save money and more importantly the time of teachers and curriculum coodinators.
A single call to Karin Spahl, the Science To Go! coordinator, followed by sending a purchase order, is all you need to do to order replenishment units for any of the 56 FOSS, STC or Insights units. Once we receive your requests and purchase order, all items are packaged by kit for each individual teacher in a school and delivered to the school. This has made distribution of the replenishment materials to the classroom teacher much easier for school personnel.
What if our district uses science units other than Foss, Insights and STC, but still needs to replenish the consumable materials?
We will develop customized replenishment units for you. Contact Karin Spahl and she will be happy to discuss your needs and work with you on a custom order.
Do you have limited space to store your science materials?
Science To Go! is adding a new service to help teachers of science manage their materials. Replenishment materials for your science kits may be delivered or picked up at intervals throughout the year (at the beginning of marking periods - for example . . . in August, November/December and March) instead of all at once in August. Orders for the entire year would still be placed in June with a purchase order. For more information about this time and money saving collaboration, please contact Karin Spahl by telephone 508-856-1529, email at Karin.Spahl@umassmed.edu, or Fax at #508-856-5360.
