Radiology Residency Program
Department Divisions
Thoracic Radiology
The division of Thoracic Radiology, one of the busiest services of the Radiology Department, is responsible for most of the 50,000 plus plain chest films and chest computerized tomographic studies performed at the University Campus of UMass Memorial Healthcare. It is staffed by three thoracic radiologists with Jerry Balikian, M.D., as its director. Its members’ main focus is residency education, distinguishing themselves as Teachers of the Year for Radiology for several years. The division performs all the percutaneous biopsies of the lung and chest wall. In addition to being an active referral service, the division conducts clinical research in pleural, pulmonary and cardiac pathology, in cooperation with the Departments of Pulmonary Medicine, Pathology and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
